YouTube channel GameXplain has roughly translated Famitsu’s newest article about the big Super Mario Maker update coming on November 4th, and has revealed some interesting new details:
TL;DR: The checkpoint will appear as a flag in the original Super Mario Bros. art style, Super Mario Bros. 3 and World are still unknown. It appears that you might only be able to place one checkpoint per sub-level. Also, it looks like you can diagonally rotate the Flag Pole.
