Yesterday, Nintendo revealed a massive new update coming to Super Mario Maker. It includes various new additions, such as item stacking, a harder Gnat Attack minigame, and most interestingly, the addition of checkpoints. While Nintendo did reveal that you can make a checkpoint by shaking a sign, it was unknown whether or not you could only place one per level. Luckily, Nintendo of Europe has clarified that you can place up to 2 different checkpoints per level.
